Why Frozen Pipes Are Dangerous
When water freezes, its volume increases by 9%. This expansion creates extreme pressure in pipes and can cause them to burst, leading to serious water damage.
8 Prevention Methods
- Insulate exposed pipes: Use foam pipe insulation on pipes in unheated areas
- Seal air leaks: Close gaps around pipes where cold air can enter
- Keep heat on: Never let indoor temperature drop below 12°C
- Let faucets drip: A slow drip keeps water moving and prevents freezing
- Open cabinet doors: Allow warm air to reach pipes under sinks
- Disconnect outdoor hoses: Drain and disconnect before first frost
- Know your shut-off valve: Be ready to turn off water quickly if a pipe bursts
- Consider pipe heating cables: For extremely cold areas
If Pipes Freeze
If a pipe freezes, turn off the water and call OSM Technical Construction immediately. Never use open flames to thaw pipes.
